So I am pleased with this one of Ruby, and a couple others of Penny and Kaboose over on Flickr.

These are after Rachel and I were out for a trail ride, trying to find the Northwest Passage – a mythical connection between two trails. There are a stunning number of trails that start out looking perfectly reasonable, and then vanish between two trees, leaving you and the horses flailing around getting sticks stuck in your helmet and bridle and all that. And then walking around in misshapen circles trying to find the trail, when it was a trail, so you can go back and try a different direction. It was a nice afternoon for it, despite the sticks.

ow ow ow

On Wednesday I had a riding lesson on Kaboose. I fell off her into a fence post, and spent a peaceful afternoon in the emergency room on morphine and waiting to see what happened next. X-rays showed nothing broken, although there is the possibility of some cracks in the ribs. My upper left arm is one giant bruise, and doesn't move so well.

Al points out that riding accidents are like car accidents, ranging from fender-benders to catastrophic. This one was body shop work and the airbag deployed, but everyone was wearing their seatbelts and is fine if rattled. My helmet has a ding, and I get a new one because of it, but I staggered away from the scene, and I'm doing measurably better today.

I would like to state for the record that X-ray techs are much nicer now than they were in my youth. They didn't tape me to the table, or shift my arm in painful ways and then shout "don't move" at me. That was the biggest surprise of the afternoon.

More ancient horses as I can move my arms to sew.

obsessed

So I have this horse. Or at least, I have the keeping of this horse. And between the horse and the rest of the things I am thinking about, I am doing nothing blogworthy. For which I apologize.

I owe you a picture of the nephew's fish.

I owe you some pictures of things I have been making (flags for Aerin to use like poi, Poi for Alice to use like, well, poi).

I have no idea when it might happen.

happy October.

2007 intentions; the scorecard

At the beginning of last year I wrote a short list of things I intended to do over the year. It wasn’t the usual list of lose weight, stop spending money, eat right, but instead a list of things I thought would make me a happier and better person if I managed to keep them in mind. I gave up on resolutions a while ago, and tend to examine my life in Feb to see if anything’s changed.

It came out to a list of six things:

  1. make a fabric postcard every day
  2. talk to friends more, every couple of days
  3. knit all the socks from the Blue Moon Sock Club, when they come in
  4. call my mother more, at least every other day
  5. ride the new bike when the weather is above 45 degrees
  6. ride horses whenever the opportunity presents itself, no sloping
off after cleaning stalls just because you can’t face a particular
horse or don’t quite feel like it

So:

postcards? check. I learned a lot about exercising my creativity, and why exactly I’ve been buying all that
cool stuff that is cluttering up my workroom and all kinds of things. I am thinking of a more detailed report on the postcards later.

Talk to friends? mixed. I can always visit with people I like more, I think I improved it some but there’s room for more talking,

knit Blue Moon Sock of the Month? failed, almost utterly. I started the first pair and they made me grumpy and unhappy and I’ve turned the heel and failed the cabling exercise on the cuff and now I have to frog them and do it better and at the moment I hate them. Then I kept from starting any of the subsequent ones because I was holding the first over my own head in a "finish your vegetables first" kind of way. (yeesh – mixed metaphors and all, that is an UGLY sentence!) So even though I kind of want to knit the last two, I haven’t started them yet. And I stopped knitting until I stepped away from the Blue Moon fibers entirely and got something that spoke to me and knit my own pattern the way I like. I finished them just before Christmas but haven’t managed to post them yet. My conclusion? I am not a knit along kind of soul.  I am OK with patterns in books but better with a recipe I can pull out of my head and follow.

call your mother
? needs improvement. say no more.

ride your bike? I could do a lot more of this. Whenever I do ride, it makes me happy. I don’t ride around town for errands because I hate dealing with the traffic at three intersections that I have to go through. I keep thinking there have to be better ways, but I’ve ridden all over town and it is just easier to walk for most of the errands in the middle. I could try to use the bike for grocery shopping. Maybe that could make an intention for next year.

Ride horses?  did great while I had a barn with an indoor ring and horses I liked. When I got busted back to a horse that made me ache, I stopped. Stopped over the summer. Restarted at two barns in the fall but chose the one with no sheltered riding for the winter, which makes the whole ride all year thing kind of difficult. I may need to think about how intent I am on riding, and what exactly I want to get out of it.

On the whole
? one rousing success, one abject failure (with introspection) and 4 mixed, with some excuses.  I can either add them onto the list for next year, or go for a new list from scratch. I think my hope for the intentions is that new habits would become an integral part of what I do, so I could think about adding other things to the list in the future. Although some were just tests, to see if the thing itself was fun (a sock of the month club – apparently not fun for me) or uplifting or energizing. Or spreading joy. Whatever.

I’ll work on the set of intentions for 2008, and post them when the year has changed.

random happy things, no postcards…

This is the ugliest, lumpiest one I did all day, because I was really really tired. I did about 4 better ones before that, AND I got to stand on Al, and stand on Al and Kate, and Kate flew me like an airplane, and I flew Kate and we had such fun. This is why I was a dishrag at the end of Tuesday.

Then on Wed I decided to ride, regardless, so I went up to the new barn and found the ponies inside. This is Dakota, the splotchy pony I ride on Mon and Wed. Dakota_looks

I rode in the rain, and the rain came down harder and harder until I was drenched but cheerful. I cleaned the barn in the rain, turned the horses out into the rain,

and went away, and the rain stopped.

Ah well. I had a nice ride.

We had two parties today, both local. The first was the 2nd annual Ward Three Picnic, with Politics and Neighbors. We had a nice time schmoozing with neighbors, talking about real estate prices and local views and the proposed off-ramp.

But we had to leave early to make it out to my neighbor’s Pirate Birthday at their lake house. We made it in time for beer and pizza and cake and the pinata. And the giving of the presents. Alice wanted to give Yelena a pony with a cart. She made the cart, and I  finished a pony. Alice found three legs on my desk. I made a fourth leg and a body, and finished it up this morning. Here he cavorts with his brothers before going into the box with ribbon. The new one is purple.

After staring at the fronts of sunflowers, I got entranced by the backs. This is a photo printed on fabric, embroidered onto a piece of hand dyed white-on-white fabric. I used the back of the hand-dye to emphasize the colors of it, rather than the spottiness of the white print.

Since it is after midnight GMT, I can post tomorrows postcard as well:

tomorrow’s postcard today

Alice was playing Pony Farm again. She really had fun driving the tiny horses. She has been working hard at making a cart for the ponies to pull the dolls, and came up with this for a pair to pull.

The doll is Marina, the ponies are Impulse and Spirit. Impulse is named in honor of Bay State Initiate, a little Morgan I used to ride at my previous barn. Alice loved him, and was captivated by the idea of all the names in a year starting with the same letter. Since the pony looked related to Nish but not exactly like him (Nish had 3 socks, a white face and one spooky eye) he got a name from the same year.

Alice, much younger, on Nish. I miss him dreadfully. This is circa 2004, which I usually think is just yesterday, except there are 3YEARS between then and now.
