in and out

I must think further about this.

The Artist Support Group had a nice meeting today, and we were wowed by our own productivity over the last year. Happy Anniversary Us, and many happy returns.

I was thinking over the layers of circles and stars I was working on, and just started stacking circles. I had to interpolate some of them with a compass, but it worked pretty well. It looked too smooth before I distressed it with a toothbrush and some sandpaper.

icicle

I saw this icicle at lunch. There is something funny and fabulous about icicles (and something deeply odd about the spelling – I have stared at that for a while, and tried several iterations before the spell checker liked it.) especially really big ones, or really baroque ones. This one isn't especially big or baroque, but I do like the way it encloses the lamp.

Totally missed yesterday. It was really busy, and I was so tired by the end I couldn’t stand up. I have been looking after my riding instructor’s barn, and on Mon and Wed I cleaned seven stalls. Usually four is plenty. Seven is falling over and moaning territory. I did stay awake at Aerin’s winter concert, which was pretty excellent.

I didn’t like the way Tuesday’s starburst came out looking inside out to me, so I started building this one from the outside in, and using thinner pieces. I like the feel of it better; it is closer to what I was aiming for. I may need to think about these some more. Maybe layers of graduated circles, with strips/stripes over the top.

Well, life has been busy, right?

I wanted something like a starburst, in celebration of the obvious, so I build this one from the inside out. That made all the subsequent layers overlap the inside and it looks like I built it outside in. Weird.

thin woven stripes

I wanted something really light blue, so I wove thin strips of light blue with white, and then stitched the piece to emphasize the vertical stripes. It still needed something, so I tucked some circles into the weaving. I was thinking of the illusions where a horse or hunter is both in front and behind a stand of trees. I think some of these Impossible Columns are the same kind of idea.

more straight lines

I was so captivated with the fringe on yesterday’s square, I made a whole block of it. But it needed something, so I added a couple circles to smooth out the edges. I like the way the striped fabric echoes the vertical lines of the tiny thin pieces of fabric.

Friday – finished yesterday and blogged today.

I like the way the red/orange background makes the blue dots vibrate, and I love the way the grid holds everything down. Nothing is fused here – all the loose edges are loose and flicky. If I rubbed over it with a toothbrush, it would all ravel in interesting ways…
